History of Winterwood Winterwood B&B started life as a 19th century barn that was converted into a tastefully appointed home in 1986. Today, our guests enjoy the warmth of open ceilings, exposed beams, hand-stencilled walls, and local antiques in a comfortable, updated setting. From the 1850's to the 1980's, the barn was used to house livestock and carriages. What was once horse stalls is now a country kitchen, and the chicken coop is part of the parlor. The 2nd floor haylofts are now overnight guest accommodations. The barn's original builders used wide wall planking recycled from saltworks used extensively on Cape Cod in the 1700's.
Originally part of a 50-acre summer estate, buildings nearby include the "Tower House", which housed the equipment needed to distribute water to the various buildings of the estate. The adjoining water tower is in original condition but is not used as a water source today. Elements of the estate continue, as three horses still call the pasture at Winterwood their home. Located on the ocean-side of Route 6, adjacent to 27,000 acres of National Park, the inn is nestled in a thick grove of pines within walking distance of several crystal-clear kettle ponds and the quaint village center of Wellfleet. This is the way Cape Cod is meant to be enjoyed. |
